Highlights of Is Drinking in Moderation Possible?

We’re told to drink responsibly! But is moderation possible? Annie Grace shares more on the challenges of moderation including:

  • Moderation requires constant decision-making: Deciding what to drink, how much, and whether to have another drink can be mentally exhausting and lead to fatigue, making it harder to resist further drinking.
  • Alcohol creates a thirst for itself: Due to tolerance, the body needs more alcohol over time to achieve the same effect, making moderation physiologically counterintuitive.
  • Alcohol impairs decision-making: Even a single drink can affect the brain’s ability to make sound judgments, making it harder to resist the urge to drink more.
  • Alcohol dehydrates the body: This can create a false sense of thirst, leading to increased cravings for more alcohol.
  • Alcohol numbs responses to normal stimuli: Over time, the brain’s pleasure center becomes less sensitive to natural sources of pleasure, making alcohol the only thing that can provide a sense of happiness.
  • Alcohol increases cravings but not pleasure: The dopamine released by alcohol increases cravings, while the pleasure derived from drinking decreases, leading to a cycle of wanting something you no longer enjoy.
