What’s In That Drink? The Truth About Alcohol

Truth About AlcoholHow many times have you asked a bartender – what’s in that drink? It seems like a fairly innocuous question, right? You’re expecting to hear something like rum, triple sec, orange juice, pineapple juice and a twist of lime. What if someone answered with the truth about alcohol?

  • Ethanol
  • Arsenic
  • Carcinogens
  • Depression
  • Pesticides
  • Propylene Glycol (also known as antifreeze)
  • Insulin disruptors
  • Infertility
  • Anemia
  • Liver Disease
  • Sexual Dysfunction
  • Ulcers
  • and more.

Probably wouldn’t do much for sales but the scary reality is that it’s all true. Every item listed above has been proven to be in alcohol or a byproduct of it. Many of us are almost hypervigilant about what we will eat or about exercising but think nothing about ingesting poison on a regular basis if its a glass of wine, a beer or a cocktail. After all – what damage can it cause?

Let’s consider wine and beer first – in a study conducted by Dartmouth College researcher, Kathryn Cottingham, people who reported drinking on average two and half beers or a glass of white wine every day had arsenic levels 20 to 30 percent higher than those of people who didn’t drink. Long-term exposure to arsenic, even at low levels, has been linked to increased risks of bladder, lung and skin cancer, as well as type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. But wait – I thought wine was good for your heart!

If the arsenic in the alcohol doesn’t phase you – how do you feel about drinking RoundUp? Alcohol comes from fermented fruit and grains. We all know that bugs & weeds wreak havoc on crops and that they are treated heavily with herbicides and pesticides. What we fail to realize is those chemicals are also prevalent in the alcohol we are drinking. Even more alarming is that regular alcohol consumption increases your absorption of herbicides, pesticides and other toxins through the skin. It’s not just what you’re ingesting that you should fear, its the way it changes your body chemistry that is really scary.

Finally, the most glaring truth about alcohol is that it is ethanol. As in we are drinking the same substance we put in our gas tank. I know that I have never pulled up to the pump and thought – I’d love a nice, cold swig of gasoline. Yet, we will day dream about downing a cold beer on a hot day. They are essentially the same item. Actually since it also probably has some antifreeze mixed into it too you could essentially not only run your vehicle on that beer but you could also keep it from overheating as well.

Alcohol, when you deconstruct it, is not “just a drink.” You’re not relaxing, letting loose or enjoying yourself by ingesting it. The truth about alcohol is that it IS dangerous – on a chemical, physical and psychological level. The dangers of alcohol without a doubt outweigh any perceived benefits.
