Our This Naked Mind May Book Club feature is The Power of Now by Eckhart Tolle. This book has been transformative and enlightening to so many readers. I personally feel it was vital in my own journey and experiences with finding freedom from alcohol.

“Pleasure is always derived from something outside you, whereas joy arises from within.”
Eckhart Tolle hits the nail on the head with the sentence above. Seeking pleasure rather than joy was why I continued drinking. This book is also what forced me to look within myself and start asking questions. Difficult questions but questions that brought me freedom in the end.
The Power of Now is a spiritual guide. It aims to show you that every minute you spend worrying about the future or regretting the past is a minute lost. This is because all you really have to live in is the present, the now. The Power of Now doesn’t stop at pushing you to get curious and ask the difficult questions though. It also provides actionable strategies which allow you to start living every minute as it occurs.
How To Read This Book
This book is one that you need to read a tiny bit at a time and then consider. As you may know, I’ve struggled with depression and I consider the tools in this book vital in my overcoming a negative state of mind on a regular basis.
Use the questions below to help guide your thoughts as you’re reading.
Eckhart suggests that we think “I wonder what my next thought will be” and as you wait you will be thoughtless and can slowly go into the now.
Did this technique work for you? Was it difficult to get to a point of being thoughtless? How has that changed?
Tolle believes there are many ways people suffer spiritually.
How many of those ways can you identify with? In what ways have you caused yourself pain?
Tolle states that compulsive thinking is an addiction.
In what ways has your thinking been like other addictions in your life? How can you apply Tolle’s techniques to combat compulsive thinking to other addictions you struggle with.

In A New Earth, Tolle expands on these powerful ideas to show how transcending our ego-based state of consciousness is not only essential to personal happiness, but also the key to ending conflict and suffering throughout the world.
