Have you ever wished you could just start over? Wipe the slate clean and begin again. I did too. I was constantly looking back on my life with a mix of angst, shame and regret. Amazingly, I discovered I could start a new life without alcohol that had me loving (almost) every minute of it.
My New Life Without Alcohol
Finding a new life without alcohol was liberating for me. As I told Jessica Cording – living this new life meant giving up certain things. It was giving up my beliefs about alcohol, giving up the misconceptions others held around me, and giving up my career. No longer could I let others convince me that I needed booze to be successful at work, to be a better mom, wife or friend. My new life without alcohol had to be lived on my terms – no one else’s.
No Going Back
Starting a new life without alcohol meant making a firm commitment. If I even considered the idea of a drink, I knew that I personally would fail and I’d be back in that life I hated. I didn’t want to go back to waking up at 3am with crippling anxiety. That girl that needed a drink just to get through the day – that was no longer me. So regardless of where I was going or what I was doing – I had to make it clear from the get-go that I wasn’t drinking.
Won’t It Be Awkward?
This new life without alcohol – won’t it be awkward? How do you socialize, have business dinners, etc without drinking? If you’re a drinker, it can seem odd but there’s no requirement to drink alcohol at happy hour, when out with clients, or really anywhere. If you don’t want to draw attention to it, show up early and order a non-alcoholic drink of your choice. Or blame it on not feeling well, medication or a new diet. My preference is to one-up it and challenge the bartender to create a super yummy, non-alcoholic cocktail. Most bartenders love the opportunity to be creative like that! Chances are, with a crafty drink like that in hand. no one will know if you’re drinking or not!

Won’t It Be Lonely?
You’re probably worried that a new life without alcohol will be lonely. After all, doesn’t everyone drink? Well no, not really. There are a lot more non-drinkers than you realize out there. So many communities exist where you can find fellow non-drinkers, both locally and virtually. Also – think outside the box! Now is the time to branch out and meet new people. Finding friends that share interests beyond wine and gossip can be the best part of a new life without alcohol!
